I found this question on many Android forums, regarding screen rotation not working suddenly, in devices like Samsung Galaxy S2, Samsung Galaxy Note and Samsung Galaxy S3. I searched for it because I had the same issue. Yes, even my device had the same problem, (I can proudly say had because now it is solved!). After searching for around 15 forums, and 40+ posts, I was able to find a solution for the screen rotation issue. Pheww! Feels good!
- They said, remove applications that might be using or getting custom rotations types, remove games that require rotation - better remove all those apps that use some kind of rotation keep running in background, which eventually comes out to be large in number if you are specifically a gamer or a reader.
- Better get a factory reset done. (This statement nearly gives you a mild stroke, I know, I had the same effect when I read that!)
- Try doing both Calibration - Settings -> Display -> Horizontal Calibration, Settings -> Display -> Gyroscope Calibration. - For me, Gyroscope Calibration was done perfectly, but every-time, while doing Horizontal Calibration, my device would restart.
- You need to get your PCB Changed, get it done fast, sooner the better.
- It is something related to some Hardware, better go to Samsung Service Center.
What got me to the Solution:
After trying so many things out there on my device, except factory reset and hardware changes - I was almost ready to give it to Samsung Service Center, and took backup of my messages and contacts in my SIM card, to transfer that on my backup phone.
I switched off my phone and took the SIM out and put it in the other phone. As I have many contacts and messages, I had to repeat this activity multiple number of times. After doing this around 4 times, I thought of checking again, whether some luck in Screen Rotation issue. And to my astonishment, the Screen Rotate had started working!
So then, I searched on forums, with a similar search key, Screen Rotation + Samsung + Crash Horizontal Calibration, remove SIM card and somewhere I found a useful link that said the same to confirm my R&D. Here it is, http://androidforums.com/ samsung-galaxy-s2- international/575534-auto- rotation-not-working-crashes- during-horizontal-calibration. html.
The user said the same. So it was confirmed. So in case, you are having the same issue, please try removing the SIM Card and let us know if it helps you out or not! And, don't forget to subscribe us to receive technology updates and useful tips and tricks.

Absolutely worked as explained. I removed the sim and restarted. Kudos :)
ReplyDeleteHi Abishek,
DeleteGreat to know that it helped you out!
Thanks for reading the article.
I would like to tell you one secret. When I was to go to Samsung Service Center, I had called them saying my problem, and they could only suggest me to take a backup of my contacts/messages and imp stuff.
Its during that, that when I removed my Sim and got this solved! So maybe, even Samsung Service Center guys didn't know the solution for this problem, else they would have asked me to do so..
Keep Referring and Keep Sharing!

So if u remove the.sim once is this a permanent solution or u need to keep taking it off as and when the screen rotatioj stops?
ReplyDeleteHi..
DeleteAs per my knowledge Yes Unfortunately!
But its not that tedious one right?
I mean, in case it stops working, just remove your sim and the screen rotation starts again.
Hi Varun
ReplyDeleteThanks for your article, but my rotation not working still :(
Tried: Calibration app from playstore
Tried: Sensor Calibration from Samsung Galaxy Settings App
Tried: 1. Rotation off, phone off, sim card out, phone on no sim, try rotation (not work)
2. phone off again, sim card in, turn on & try rotation (not work)
Installed rom with Factory Reset Data Wipe etc.
Tried CM Kernel & Siyah which normally works.
Definitely issue is something rom related or settings calibration.
Hi Fatjoe,
DeleteI feel sorry that my article couldn't help you. Its for the first time that anyone told me that removing sim didn't start the screen rotation again.
I would request you to go to Samsung Service Center for this. Maybe there is some other issue, leading to this case of yours.
Let me also inquire locally, and in case I find some solution will let you know. Also, in case you find something that helps you, please post here, so that others can take advantage of it.

I have just a Galaxy clone, but my device had the same issue and your solution worked for my phone too. This seems to be a android jelly bean bug.
ReplyDeleteHi Joern,
DeleteGood to know that it worked for you. Its not a Jelly Bean Bug, because if it was, it won't have come for me when my device was in Ice Cream Sandwich. It seems some bug Samsung Hardware itself. (Just a supposition, as the solution works for all Samsung Galaxy devices regardless of their Android Version!)

Sprint phones don't use SIM cards. Is there anything else I could try?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI have followed the below mentioned step
ReplyDelete1. turn off
2. remove battery
3. remove SIM
4. insert SIM
5. insert battery
6. turn on
auto rotation still not working. am I following the correct steps ?
Hi Nimesh,
DeleteI feel sorry that the trick didn't work for you. Please try a few things:
1. Keep the Sim card removed for 10-15 seconds and then put it in.
2. If your Sim is not behind the battery, please dont turn it off, and dont remove the battery also, just remove the sim and keep it.
3. Clean the Sim slot, by blowing air thru your mouth. Please DO NOT try to clean it liquid or water. Keep it dry.
After all these things, if it doesn't work, I am sorry to say, you will have to contact Samsung Service Center.
But in any case, whether it works or not, please let me know in comments here, so that it could be helpful for other users.
Sincerely,
Varun Shringarpure

Like everyone here, I had this problem and rectified it with your given procedure. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteBut the real question is, what caused this? I wasn't even doing anything different; just browsing the internet as I usually do, turned off the phone for not even a minute, and bam--auto rotate stopped working. Tracing this stupid problem to the source so you can prevent it from happening ever again seems like the ultimate solution.
There doesn't seem to be a specific reason for Auto Rotate to stop working. If you say, as in your case, you use it only for Internet surfing, I never surf on my phone. Yes, I am a gamer, and like to install various apps and try them out on my phone. And I thought that might have led to this.
DeleteBut even my cousin had the same problem, who doesn't even do that.. He uses a smartphone only as a simple phone for calls and sms. So, no specific scenario which leads to this. Still it happens.
But I am happy, that we atleast have a solution now. Let it happen again, let it stop, we can start it back!
Also I request you to post a comment with your identity instead of Anonymous. Then, it would be useful to me to know who it is. Hope you understand?

Doesn't work for me , tried twice already. I will actually tell you my prob so u may be able to help me more.
ReplyDeleteI can actually turn it but not normal i have to rotate it more degrease than i should to make it turn..
Does your screen rotate after you turn it? If yes, then Screen Rotation is already working.
DeleteYes, if it is slower, then what you expect, maybe some application you have installed, is hindering it.
From when did this start happening? Have you installed any heavy game or anything which requires Screen rotation? If yes, please remove it and try operating your phone for some days.
Again, if nothing helps, I would recommend you to go to Samsung Service Center.

Varun Shringarpure

Everything is rotating except the home screen on Galaxy Grand, dual sim!!
ReplyDeleteAs per my knowledge, Home Screen is not there to rotate.
DeleteHave your images/videos started rotating? Have the games that require Screen Rotation, started doing so?
If the Answer of your question is yes, then I your Screen Rotation is working!
Also, it would be great if you comment with your identity, instead of Anonymous.

ReplyDeleteI removed the battery and my micro sd card, reinserted the battery, powered up my Note 2, and the auto-rotate function worked perfectly!
Afterwards, I powered the device down again and reinserted the micro sd card. I turned the phone back on again, and everything is functioning as it should!

ReplyDeleteI have the galaxy s3 (i9300) sph-l710 sprint and I don't have a sim card how do I fix this problem
ReplyDeleteJust doing a simple restart fixes the problem for me, don't need to remove the battery or sim; doesn't make the problem any less annoying though, not after spending so much on a top of the line Android phone!
ReplyDeletehi i m new user to android using samsung gxy grand duos;
ReplyDeletei want to knw that ,home screen does rotate in my phone or not,
all application work with rotation, but i never find my phone menu or home screen rotate ever.
please answer my Q
What I do when you get a new phone is go through all the screens and options in settings and see what's there under each option. This problem is easily handled under Settings, Display, and check the box next to Auto Rotate Screen. Sometimes that may get turned off. If it's already checked, uncheck it, restart, check Auto Rotate again, and it should work. It's the solution without having to do the backup, removal of sim card, etc.
ReplyDeleteAgree with your point Maggie! However, from the readers comment you can see that some weird issue requires some weird solutions! :)
DeleteThanks for giving valuable feedback. Keep reading and help us to spread this blog.

Removing sim worked like a charm...thank you!
ReplyDeleteIt didn't work on mine so i discovered. That i had turn auto-rotation off first (in settings-Display-Auto_rotation). Then remove the battery, restart and then renable Auto rotation in settings, then it worked.
